Life’s Ups and Downs…and My Place in it All

Embarrassed Mommy…

Let me set this up for you…

I am exiting the sh*wer this morning and I hear my Baby Boy, who is on the bed with Daddy playing, fall off and hit the floor.  I, of course, immediately run out of the bathroom without getting fully clothed…

Big Brother:  “Why do those things bounce?”

Me: (groan)–as I go back into the bathroom and close the door.

Luckily Baby Boy only bumped his head a little…no bruise–just a red mark that faded with a little time this morning.

I don’t know who was more scarred from this traumatic experience…Baby Boy, Big Brother or Me.  I am thinking ME!

The Inevitable Climber

Our Baby Boy has learned to climb.

I caught him pulling a chair (red plastic cheapy kids chair) up to the sofa the other day.  He proceeded to stand on it and put his leg over the back of it onto the couch. (sigh)

One day I won’t be there.  He will get hurt.

I also caught him standing on Big Brother’s stool in front of the fire place.  He had one leg up on the base of the fire place.  I am not sure why the stool was there.  Big Brother knows why.  Baby Boy found a different reason for it’s placement.

I am sure I will be blogging about his accident while climbing sometime soon.  Not sure when, but as I blog here, I know…

It.  Will.  Happen.

New Baby Boy Eating Antics…

Okay, so I ask…If he only wants to eat bananas when he has finished only the banana on his plate, do I just keep feeding him bananas????  I never had this dilemma with Big Brother…I could barely get him to eat fruit.  Baby Boy loves his fruit.  He threw a fit this morning.  I had given him cereal and banana for breakfast.  He finished the banana and asked for another…(well, I say ask, but he’s barely 16 months old and doesn’t talk…so asking comes via pointing and grunting).  Anyway, I pointed to his uneaten cereal (multigrain cheerios–hey it has some sweet in it) and he gave me an ugly look.  He cried and threw a fit…I pointed at the cheerios again.  Finally he took a bite, made an ugly face, spit it out…and pointed and grunted again.  Needless to say, I gave in.  The boy had 2 bananas for breakfast…(and two dirty diapers today since he also had yogurt covered raisins today).  By the way, he asked for a third banana–I dismissed him and let him out of his chair.  He didn’t point for another after that since he was free to go play.

So, my question is…Do I just let him have whatever he wants?  Obviously if this were candy or goldfish, I would not have…but, it is Fruit.  It’s not like it is bad for him.  It is not possible to explain to him yet…so this was my temporary answer.

Any help appreciated… :)

Oh, and one more thing…he is now eating like a bird.  Only eats what he wants off the plate or not at all.  What happened to my little eating machine?  Big Brother always ate like a bird, so I didn’t question it.  Baby Boy can still put it away, but it is like he has this off button for the times when he is presented with food he dislikes or thinks he will dislike.  What gives??

Our Cherished Tube of “Buh” Cream

In our house, diaper rash cream is called Butt Cream, or “Buh” Cream to my 15 month old.  Every diaper change, I tell Baby Boy, “Let’s go change your diaper.”  He toddles into his room and lays down (face first) onto his Boppy pillow.  I get a diaper and sit down with the wipes.  then I turn him over on his back and he automatically holds up his legs for me.  It truly is funny.

Now, if he is dirty, he will first go to the changing table (that is now a diaper supply holding table) and get his butt cream.  We put all the tubes of butt cream in a tie-on cloth pocket holder-thingy.  It is at his level, so he can get it.

The funny part about this is that he truly likes the butt cream on him.  I don’t know why…I guess it has a refreshing feeling…anyway, I thought I would share one of his many “quirks.”

My son (baby Boy) ate cheetoes today…He discovered that eating cheetoes dipped in vanilla icing off a cupcake was the greatest snack ever….

‘Nuff said!   (ugh!)

Somebody has taken over my son’s body…

My son told me two magical sentences today:

Upon asking for a TV show to watch, I asked him, “What would you like to watch?”  He answered with,

“Whatever you want to put on for me, Mommy.”

Upon asking for a snack to eat, I asked him, “What would you like to eat?”  He answered with,

“Whatever you want to get for me, Mommy.”

Okay, so where is my son…what have they done with him?

My Accident Waiting to Happen….

Well, I have heard of moms who spend lots of time taking care of their childrens’ wounds.  I have talked to parents who say, “Just wait…”

I am starting to realize this situation.

We have been very lucky in the past.  Big Brother is very cautious.  He looks before he steps, he is timid and doesn’t rush into things.

Baby Brother, on the other hand…Now he is NOT timid, NOT careful, and NEVER looks before stepping.  Of course, a lot of this has to do with the fact that he just started walking, doesn’t talk yet and is still pretty young (only 15 months).  For those reasons, I do need to give him a little credit.  However, I can already see part of my future before me.  He is my accident waiting to happen.

My friend was telling me last night that she got a call from her daycare the other day.  Her 6 year old had fallen during swinging and split his head open.  3 staples later…he was okay.  She is pretty gutsy…and she can handle blood.  I, on the other hand, do not handle stuff like that well.  I would have freaked.

I guess at some point I will be “broken in.”  I am not looking forward to it…I am pretty darn freaked out about it, actually.  It is a good thing daddy is a Doc, and I can ask him things.  I can also count on him to keep me steady and not let me freak out unless it is time to.  Now, the freaking out that I happen to do before being able to reach him because he is on a case in surgery and cannot return his page immediately, I guess that I will have to figure out how to handle that myself.

Any kids who like to be n*ked out there?

So, I have been stripping Baby Boy down to his diaper in the evenings, right.  He sweats all the time and loves to be n*ked.  (completely understandable).  Well, the Big Brother has decided that he wants to be stripp*d down to his und*rwear too…Okay, I can handle that–it is in the privacy of our own home, whatever.

So, you can imagine my surprise tonight when I went to check on my sons (they had gone to Big Brother’s room and were really quiet).  I peek in to the room to see Big Brother stark n*ked.  I say, “Where are your clothes?”  He says, “I took them off! (all smiles).”  I tell him, “We just put on your jammies, put them back on!”  I then turn the corner to look at Baby Boy.  All I see is him, big smiles, looking up at me with his diaper and pants pulled down to his knees.

…Grown!…

Either he learned how to get his britches off or “someone” wanted brother n*ked too!

….Ooh, I can only imagine the spam and searches I am going to see from this post…

Things I am surprised about…

In the past few days I have been surprised with how much Baby Boy understands when it comes to me talking to him…He is only 14 months (almost) and he only says “Ma-Ma, Da-Da, Uh-Oh, Look, and What’s That?”  Everything else that comes out of his mouth sounds like “Bah!” or “Da!”

For example:

About a week ago, I asked Baby Boy to throw away the piece of paper he found on the floor.  Viola!  He did it!  (and clapped afterwords…obviously proud of himself).

The other day, I casually told him to go put his toy in his room.  I wasn’t expecting him to understand…and then he turned around and walked to his room.  So, he apparently knows where his room is.

This afternoon Baby Boy laid his head on my lap when I was sitting on the couch.  I looked at him and asked, “Do you want to take a nap?”  Amazingly, he turned around and headed for his room.  When we got there, he stood by his crib and looked at me…I put him in bed and left the room–No crying…he just went to sleep (and slept from 2:00pm-5:30pm when I woke him up).

Tonight, I got the boys and we went to Big Brother’s room to clean it up (they had been playing with EVERYTHING all day, so it was quite a mess.)  I showed Baby Boy where the dirty clothes was and put him in charge of putting socks in the dirty clothes and throwing paper away in the trash.  He made several trips and did it all very well.

I guess one day he will look up at me and speak in sentences…I am constantly shocked to realize how much he knows.  It is easy for me to lump him and Big Brother together and forget that everyone learns differently.  For Big Brother, speaking came fast and easy–physical stuff was slower to come.  For Baby Boy, physical seems to be innate, while speaking is not.  Just something that I think about and wonder about…

Boy Meet Corner of Wall…

“Boy, meet corner of island in kitchen.”

Our first ER visit occurred this evening.  Right after we made a new house rule.  No Running around the island in the kitchen.

We took him in because he was squinting really bad after and then crying.  Otherwise, we would have let him tuff it out.  Better safe than sorry.  Doctor told us to check on him every 3 hours tonight.  We got home at 10:30–He was in bed by 10:45.  My first check will be in about 30 minutes.  Then off to bed for me.

Too Smart for his Own Good!!

Tonight Big Brother and I were working in some workbooks that I got for him from Ebay.  When he finished we put them into the folder that I picked up at walmart for his worksheets.  The folder has a bumble bee on it, so he calls it his Bumble Bee folder.  Anyway, before putting the papers away, I said “Can you write your name on the papers first?”  Big Brother said “Sure.”  So, we got a red marker and I asked him what letter would be first.  He told me, “B.”  I said, “Good.  Can you write an B?”  He wrote his B on his paper.  Next, I asked, “What letter comes after the B?”  He thought for a minute and said, “I.”  I was on a roll!  He is doing great, right???  So, he wrote the I and I asked him, “Okay, what comes next??”  He looked at me, looked up in the air, looked at me again…it was obvious he didn’t remember.  I then asked him, “What makes a guhh sound?”  He looked at me again and then looked over my right shoulder.  All of a sudden a bright lightbulb came on and he had a ear-to-ear grin on his face.  The next thing I knew he ran past me and looked at the refridgerator on his paper from school.  The teacher had neatly printed his name on the paper at the bottom.  He ran back over and told me, “G!”  I laughed as I called him a “cheater!”  He, of course, doesn’t know what that means, but he deduced that it meant he was “silly.”  I didn’t correct him for the moment, but that boy did it for the rest of the letters!!!  Oh, my–definitely too smart for his own good!!!  I have created a sneaky cheater!!! (No, my son’s name isn’t “Big Boy,” but I couldn’t really spell his name, right?  What would be the point of calling him “Big Boy?”)

Eww!! Yucky!!

Today, while picking Big Brother and Baby Boy up from Daycare, I was greatly amused.  I had entered Big Brother’s room and he had spotted me very quickly.  His little friend (who is a girl), A, came up and said goodbye to Big Brother.  Upon hugging him, she planted a kiss on his cheek.  The next thing I know I hear:  “Eww!  Yucky!!”  It was funny–and I chuckled.  A, on the other hand, got a little embarrassed and her feelings were hurt.  She shed a couple of tears and I bent down and told her it was alright.  This scene was just too cute.

Caught Him Eating Paper!!

Baby Boy got caught red-handed and full of smiles today eating paper!! The subscription flyer out of a parenting magazine no less! The worse part? I watched him doing it and didn’t “realize” what he was doing for like, 5 minutes??? Oh, well–A little extra fiber never hurt anyone!

Let’s Go for a Ride!!

Here are some rare pictures of Big Brother on his bike.  He absolutely hates his helmet and will not always go bike riding because of it.

A New Game in Our Household

Big Brother has been playing a new game lately with Baby Boy.  “Sandwich Baby Boy” is very fun for them and distressing for me.  It is played by taking mommy’s big body pillow and allowing Baby Boy to lay down hugging it while Big Brother takes the “loose” end of it and “sandwiches” Baby Boy.  I am constantly watching them, so safety is not as much of an issue–but it is enough of a stressor to me that I am constantly saying, “Be gentle, Big Brother”  or “careful” or “Let Baby Boy get up” or, well, you get the idea.  Baby Boy, of course, loves this game.  He never cries out or gets fussy.  He is happy to oblige Big Brother.  More often I hear, “Baby Boy!” ”…Mom!!  Baby Boy is pulling my hair!!”

So is this what my life will be like from now on having rambunctious boys???  Ooh, help me!!
