Bert at 21 months (he’s now 5)

nicholas 21 months[1] To you new people out there—his name isn’t really Bert.

I’ve been working on this one since yesterday.  Somewhere in there I aged him a bit, I think.  This is by far the best one I’ve done, I think.  I’m very happy with it.  I don’t like his reflection, so I might have to go back in and change that up a bit.

  1. This is really good. I was trying to look for something to give you advice on but there is nothing. I love the shading where his skin looks “shiny” on the side of his nose/forehead and cheeks. Terrific job.

    • thanks! I am trying to figure out just what I did to make him appear older. Not sure there…maybe someone who knows what they are doing will stumble upon this and enlighten me. :)

  2. Kids are so hard to draw. Adding lines make them instantly look older, but not enough lines make them look like every other kid. The eye’s are bigger and very little white, but that can make them look cartoonish if over done. It’s so hard, but you do an excellent job at it.

    • thanks! so it was the lines and the eyes. I just know that one moment I had it pretty much nailed…and then I started doing some more stuff and looked up again and it was an older boy. I didn’t know how to undo what I had done…plus I had darkened so much I couldn’t really undo. I guess this is a testament to paying more attention as you change the smallest things. :) I appreciate your response.

  4. Great drawing. Didn’t know you were so talented. I’m going to pull out my old art class knowledge and say… small children look small because 1) their eyes are bigger than their head (eyes are full-size as children) 2) foreheads are larger and generally stick out further than in adulthood 3) faces show baby fat in lower cheeks, lips, and around eyes. Maybe you can figure out if any of those things can be more emphasized. I think it looks just like him, though.
