In case you missed this extraordinary historical acceptance speech from President Elect, Barack Obama…please take an opportunity to listen.
Even if you don’t agree with him, listen…for he will be your leader for the next 4 years. This speech is inspiring and historic, even if you don’t agree in what it stands for. Your children and your children’s children will learn about this moment…and you can say you saw it when it happened. Remember the feelings of people that you meet so you can provide your offspring with insight as to how things were.
To those who voted for him, congratulations–your voice was heard. May it continue to be heard…
To those of you who didn’t vote for him, try to wrap your mind around this. The one thing we have all learned from history is that nothing comes of us if we all disagree. Most Americans are unhappy with how things are, and although the way things will be may not be your ultimate ideal, we will not have anything ideal if we are not supportive of our President. Hold him accountable, be heard, and believe in your causes, BUT Support him. A person cannot lead those who don’t want to be led…, but most importantly, People must not follow blindly. Hold him up to his end…as I suspect he would expect you to.
However you feel, keep in mind that there are those out there who will not be supportive of our new administration, no matter how good or bad they do. If you are one of those people, just remember that giving up on something/someone is not the way to get things that you want done. If you have ever been given up on, you understand what I mean. One important lesson that I learned as a teacher of high school students was that giving up on a student was the worst thing one could do. It said that you did not believe in them. People need to be believed in to succeed.
Keep in mind that as a nation we are one… In the words of a very knowledgeable man:
“We must all hang together, or assuredly we shall all hang separately.”
- Benjamin Franklin (attributed), at the signing of the Declaration of Independence, July 4, 1776
