Radishes, Squash, Green Beans, Chives, Basil, Cilantro…I think. Our Garden Update

Well, it has been about a month since we planted our garden in the back yard. Big Brother and I have been watering it every other day. I think it is about time to put the mulch on. I waited so that the seeds could get a good start. Now, I am thinking mulching would be good since everytime I go out to water the ground is cracked. We thoroughly soak the plantar every other day and the sprinkler system runs too. It should be interesting to see how they do when it truly gets hot outside.

Anyway, here are our updated pictures. I believe this is squash, green beans and radishes. The okra has not seemed to grow yet (unless, of course, one of these plants is okra). I still need to go buy a tomato plant as well.

I forgot to add, the following are pictures of our herbs.  So far the cilantro and the basil are growing great.  The chives are wonderful as well, although I suspect something is coming over and eating them (a black cat maybe?  I have seen him in the neighborhood.  Do cats eat chives??)  The Thyme and the Oregano, on the other hand are a pretty sad sight (or not a sight at all).  Here they are (or in the case of the thyme, here it is not).

  1. Gardening is so cool with kids. They get to participate and see actual results. We always start a couple of things from seeds in the house…you can do it on a wet paper towel with beans and they can see the bean swell, and the roots start to form. It is really cool for them…and me too!

  2. I am planning to do this in one of our activities for Big Brother’s Preschool at home. I am also going to incorporate simple graphing and measurement into it. It should be interesting.
