Mommy Problem #1–How To Keep the House Clean

It has been my experience the past 4 years that I am unable to keep our house clean if I am working fulltime.  Heck, I had a hard time keeping it clean even when I was home with Big Brother.  Recently I put much of my efforts into keeping just our living area and kitchen clean each night.  I actually did well–The area remained clean for almost a month.  I dusted regularly, vaccumed a couple of times each week.  Each night I did all the dishes, cleaned off the kitchen counters and the dining room table.  I would clean up all the toys in the living room and straighten any mess that we had made.  I did this without fail and went to bed exhausted each night.  I had worked all day, picked up the boys, come home and made dinner, put the boys to bed and then cleaned the kitchen.  Now, I don’t want to sound like a martyr–My husband helped me, as he always does.  Anyway, I was exhausted.  Then, night float came…and I couldn’t hack it by myself.  The house went to shit–and now here we are.  The house is once again a mess (back to its normal look) and I am typing on the computer.

Any suggestions?  I have tried the method of cleaning certain parts of the house at different times of the week, but let’s face it–I was only trying to keep the living room and kitchen clean.  I was not even worrying about the rest of the house.  I am thinking I am probably not quite organized enough to tackle a different part of the house at different times of the week.  The other thing that bothers me is not ever having things clean because when I only clean part of the house it is impossible to ever see all of it clean at the same time.  Any ideas would be much appreciated.

i got nothing for you as far as seeing it all clean…but in my experience that won’t happen anyway unless you clean house in the middle of the night and stay up till sunrise enjoying it! i can’t even keep our floor cleared of toys to vacumn the dang thing! so that is my input on that. i do sort of what you tried (i think i told you this before). i have learned to “let it go” as far as being anal and expecting everything clean at one moment. so here is my schedule. i clean once a week, that is right once a week. i do dishes nightly (yes that sucks but dishes and laundry are one of those never ending piece of crap things), i pick up toys (mostly) nightly, my floors are always dirty (we have a cat that tracks litter, so you learn to overlook that…mostly), usually i will do a “quick vacumn” on the weekends (this means not moving things just getting the big areas), i do one load of laundry during the week (this is composed of baby clothes and towels, things i don’t have to fold for a long time), so i wash it and leave it in the dryer until the weekend, then i clean one thing a week (on the weekend), one weekend i do floors (vacumn good, swiffer or mop), next weekend i do bathrooms, next weekend i dust, then i start over. some weekends i skip and don’t do my chore…but it isn’t too bad. i find that this works for me. the house stays relatively clean and if i have company come i can quickly “spot clean” and be fine. (vacumn, wipe off bathroom counters, etc.). with laundry i hate contantly doing it, so i wash it all and lay out stuff that needs to be hung, everything else goes into baskets. i fold it all at once and put it away all at once. i hate doing it as it is finished b/c it feels like you are doing that all day, so i prefer to get it over with all at once. this is my method to my madness. :)

Velcro. Both on the walls and on the kids…it is the ONLY way!

Kristy: You are much more organized than me. Not a bad idea to do towels and blanket-stuff during the week and let it sit in the dryer…mmm…I might have to try that. I HATE folding clothes. Washing them? Drying them? All fine–for some reason though I tend to let them sit in the basket when they are through—Unless they are permanent press–then I will hang them up. (although I have also been guilty of just laying them flat and not hanging them up either.

Morethananelectrician: Not a bad idea at all! I have visions of little legs and arms wailing around. We could give it a go–I’ll try it and record it for YouTube. We can put our blog addys on the end of the movie and watch our blog hits rise. Maybe it would be a world-wide spectacle. It would be fun until CPS came knocking. Of course they seem to have their hands busy here in Texas with all those FLDS kids.

Okay, I am a little behind on my blog reading, I admit it. :) I know several people who have succesfully done the Fly Lady program (www.flylady.com). Not me, of course. My house still looks like crap. But, it’s gotta work for SOME people, right?

[...] not long ago, I blogged about needing help/ideas on how to keep my home clean.  You can read it here.  Nicole, commented to me that she had friends that had tried Flylady successfully.  Willing to [...]

Hey Everyone,

I just googled house cleaning blogs and this was one for the top 20. I was wondering if you could tell with the cleaning you do, how many diffrent type of cleaners do you use in the course of the day?
